Downriver Student Wins $10K For College Through Michigan 2020

WYANDOTTE (WWJ) A downriver high school student is a big winner in a campaign to promote a plan for free college tuition for all Michigan students.

Spencer Genrich, a graduating senior from Roosevelt High School in Wyandotte, is the $10,000 winner in the video competition for the Michigan 2020 tuition plan.

Genrich says many students just can't afford to go to the college of their choice.

"You know, there are a lot of kids that are really qualified at my school to go to, say, Michigan State or U of M Ann Arbor, but they can't go because of funding so they have to settle at a school they don't necessarily like as much and I don't think that's really fair," Genrich said.

Genrich plans to attend Wayne State University in the fall, majoring in journalism.

The competition she won asked students to create a video that could potentially help Michigan 2020 win passage of a plan to provide free college tuition to all Michigan students by cutting business tax loopholes and applying the money to funding education.

Of her video, Genrich said she kept it "short, sweet, and to the point," saying her goal was to present the facts in layman's terms. Learn more about the proposal HERE.
