Pistons Hire New Head Coach

AUBURN HILLS (WWJ) -- It's official... the Detroit Pistons hire a new head coach. The basketball club has announced that it signed Maurice Cheeks to a multi-year contract.

It's the third shot at being an NBA head coach for Cheeks, who previously held that role with the Philadelphia 76ers and the Portland Trailblazers. In his eight years as a head coach, the 56-year-old Cheeks won 284 games. However, he's only made the playoffs three times -- twice with the Trailblazers and once with the Sixers.

Cheeks comes over from the Oklahoma City Thunder, where he'd been an assistant coach since 2009 under Scott Brooks. He'll replace Lawrence Frank, who was fired by the Pistons at the end of this past season.

Cheeks becomes the 29th head coach in Detroit franchise history.
