Warren Hires High-Profile Criminal Defense Attorney
WARREN (WWJ) - A well-known local criminal defense attorney is getting a new, decidedly lower-profile gig.
Warren Mayor Jim Fouts has appointed David Griem as the new city attorney, subject to City Council approval. Fouts said Griem's experience "will be a tremendous asset" to the city and its legal department.
A former Macomb County assistant prosecutor and federal prosecutor at the U.S. Attorney's Office, Griem worked in the Warren legal department in the 1980s.
Most notably, Griem has handled a number of highly publicized cases as a criminal defense attorney -- representing accused wife killers Stephen Grant and Bob Bashara.
Griem dropped Grant as a client before he was convicted of second-degree murder for killing and dismembering his wife, Tara. Similarly, Griem resigned as Bashara's lawyer before he was charged with killing his wife, Jayne.
Griem declined to comment on the appointment.
