Anibal Sanchez And Alex Avila Headed To DL

The Tigers have announced that starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez and catcher Alex Avila are headed to the DL.

Sanchez lasted just 3.2 IP and was pulled due to shoulder stiffness during Saturday's game. He has been sidelined with a strained right shoulder. On the season Sanchez has a 2.76 ERA with a 6-5 record while striking out 100 and walking 23. Manager Jim Leyland said he expects Sanchez to miss two starts.

Jose Alvarez, who made a splash June 9 by allowing just three hits and one run over six innings for a win in his major league debut, is coming up to pitch in Sanchez's place Thursday.

Avila, who was hit by a pitch on his left wrist Sunday, left the game in pain. The Tigers have termed it a deep contusion of the left forearm. Avila has hit .172 with 5 HR and 13 RBI.

"He was in a lot of pain," Leyland said. "He told me today, probably the worst pain he's been in ever."

In addition, catcher Bryan Holaday and outfielder Avisail Garcia have both been called up from triple-A Toledo.
