Body Found ID'd As Missing Kayaker

SHELBY TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - A body found in the Clinton River over the weekend is that of a missing kayaker.

The Macomb County Medical Examiner's office made the ID on Tuesday, five days after 47-year-old Oliver Dixon, III, went missing.

Shelby Township police said the Sterling Heights man parked his vehicle at the River Bends Park boat launch, at Ryan Road and 22 Mile Road, on Thursday and then disappeared.

According to family members, the father of three had planned to take part in a weekend kayak event in Utica — but he never showed up.

The Macomb County Sheriff's Office marine division, police,  family, and volunteers conducted a search between the River Bends Canoe Launch and Heritage Park

Late Sunday afternoon, searchers found his body along with his blue-and-white kayak beneath a log jam.

Foul play isn't suspected in Dixon's death. An investigation continues.

Authorities have cautioned kayakers about the speed of the current in the Clinton River, especially after heavy spring rains. The river was high following last week's storms.
