9-Year-Old Injured In ATV Crash

FREEDOM TWP. (WWJ) - Police say a 9-year-old boy is recovering in the hospital after he was hit by a truck while riding an ATV.

The accident happened around 2:45 p.m. Tuesday on Ellsworth Road, just west of Steinbach Road, in Washtenaw County's Freedom Township.

According to Michigan State Police, the boy was riding a 90cc Arctic Cat all-terrain vehicle through a field when he exited onto Ellsworth Road, without stopping. A pickup truck that was traveling eastbound on Ellsworth Road was unable to avoid a collision and struck the ATV, police said.

The boy, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered several injuries to his head, shoulder and back, and was transported to University of Michigan Hospital. He was last listed in stable condition.

The 21-year-old driver of the pickup truck was uninjured. Police say the man told them he didn't see the ATV until it pulled onto the roadway and he couldn't stop in time.
