Elderly Pedestrian Killed By Car On Woodward

FERNDALE (WWJ) - Police say a 70-year-old Ferndale woman has died after she was hit by a car on Woodward Avenue.

Police say they responded to the scene of the crash on Woodward and College avenues, just south of 9 Mile Road, around 8:45 a.m. Tuesday and found the woman laying in the roadway.

Officers performed first aid on the woman until EMS responded and transported her to William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, where she was pronounced dead.

According to police, several witnesses reported that the woman had crossed the busy intersection against a red signal and walked into the path of a 2003 Buick, driven by an 80-year-old resident of Durham, North Carolina. Witnesses also reported that other motorists had narrowly missed striking the woman as she walked into traffic, police said.

The driver, who was uninjured, was interviewed by a detective at the scene and released.

Police say alcohol is not considered a factor in the crash. The woman's name was not immediately released.
