Impact Analytical To Open New Labs

MIDLAND -- When Impact Analytical breaks the seal on its cutting-edge new home next week, it will signify not merely the latest step in its rise to national prominence among analytical testing laboratories, but the biggest step as well -- so far.

Impact will officially open the doors to its new 17,000-square-foot offices and labs with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception Wednesday, June 26 from 3 to 6 p.m. at 1940 Stark Road in Midland. For scientists and staff, it's both affirmation of the company's impressive growth and an expansion whose time had come.

"This facility is truly state-of-the-art for laboratory testing and expands our capacity by more than 20 percent," said Impact business manager Eric Hill. "It was designed to maximize efficiency, safety and standardization, so we are able to better serve our customer's needs. The laboratory spaces were designed specifically to match our work process."

Impact began its existence as the in-house analytical testing division of Michigan Molecular Institute. In the late 1990s, as its reputation for providing testing expertise reached beyond MMI's walls, Impact began to attract contract work for companies across the country.

Today, Impact provides analytical testing services to more than 300 companies worldwide, serving the pharmaceutical, plastics, consumer products, medical device, packaging, automotive and specialty chemical industries. Its staff of 35 scientists enjoy access to more than 80 instruments across six distinct testing areas, including elemental analysis, gas separation, liquid separation, microscopy, molecular characterization and thermal and mechanical properties.

"With our scientists and these facilities, Impact Analytical is easily in the top tier of analytical labs," Hill said. "Demand for our services has been rising every year, so we have been hiring additional staff and shortening turnaround times. Our new facility enables us to continue to improve our services to our clients."

Hill said the company is hopeful Impact's grand opening is merely a beginning.

"We'll be adding new positions in the next year," he said. "That's one of the things that is so attractive to us about the new facility -- it's already well-equipped to handle new additions. The first half of 2013 indicates another strong year for business; we're on track to increase sales by 15 percent. We're in a steady state of growth, and now we've got the lab space to do so."

At the reception on Wednesday, the Midland Chamber of Commerce will conduct the ribbon cutting ceremony at 3:15 p.m. Impact's management team will follow with a presentation, personal laboratory tours and a chance to meet and speak with the company's crew of analytical experts.
