Tigers catcher Alex Avila began his minor-league rehab assignment Sunday with Triple-A Toledo.

Avila, who served as the designated hitter, finished 0 for 3 with a walk in his first game since June 16. He is hitting .172/.271/.288 in 163 at-bats before landing on the 15-day disabled list with a forearm injury.
