Kilpatrick Has More Complaints About Prison Stay

MILAN, Mich. (WWJ) - Kwame Kilpatrick isn't satisfied with the amenities available at the federal prison in Milan.

The incarcerated ex-Detroit mayor — who's still hoping to be released on bond ahead of his sentencing in a city hall corruption case  —  says the facility doesn't have ice or exercise equipment.

The Detroit News reports Kilpatrick, 43, is transported for private physical therapy sessions outside prison twice a week. Kilpatrick, who had earlier complained about long wait for medical care while behind bars, had surgery earlier this month to repair a knee injury he says he sustained while he was being transferred into a prison van.

In paperwork filed with the 6th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, Kipatrick's court-appointed lawyer said Milan does not have the proper medical facilities and equipment necessary to aid in his client's recovery. Attorney Harold Gurewitz says Kilpatrick is broke, is not a danger to the public, and his damaged knee is just one more reason he's not a flight risk and should be granted bond.

In March, Kilpatrick and an old friend, Bobby Ferguson, were convicted of racketeering conspiracy and other crimes. The government said Kilpatrick fixed contracts in a "pay to play" scheme. Prosecutors said, while mayor, Kilpatrick accepted bribes and abused a nonprofit fund, enjoying a posh lifestyle while his constituents suffered.

Kilpatrick has said his trial was unfair.

No sentencing date has been set.
