Two Killed After SUV Crashes, Bursts Into Flames

CLINTON TWP. (WWJ/AP) - Police say two people are dead following a single-vehicle crash in Macomb County.

The accident happened around 12:37 a.m. Tuesday at Kelly and Nunneley roads, near 16 Mile Road and Moravian Drive in Clinton Township.

Police say an SUV that may have been speeding went off the road, hit a utility pole and burst into flames.

"Police personnel and civilians on the scene almost instantly upon impact and receiving the call were unable to extinguish and rescue the occupants inside," police said in a statement.

Firefighters responded to the scene and extinguished the fire. The driver and passenger were unresponsive when pulled from the vehicle by rescue crews.

Investigators plan to use dental records to identify the victims.

Police say it's too early to tell if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact Clinton Township police at 586-493-7911.
