City Completes Major Renovation Of Clinch Park Beach Area

A nearly $3 million renovation of Clinch Park, the most celebrated and prominent of Traverse City’s West Bay beach areas, is in its final stages.

The new park includes  a new terraced lawn area with stone sitting walls, interactive playground equipment, new site furniture and lighting, a kayak launch, a rebuilt and relocated TART trail, a splash pad and interactive outdoor water exhibit, a new park bathhouse with public restrooms, eight changing rooms and a concessions stand.

The pedestrian tunnel connecting the park to downtown Traverse City has also been reconstructed. Clinch Park is the first project tackled from the City’s 2010 Bayfront Plan, a series of recommended improvements along the shoreline.

One of the major elements in the park, the 79-year-old vacant building that once housed the Con Foster Museum, is being redeveloped by the Traverse City Film Festival as the Bijou By The Bay, a 150-seat movie theatre that will be open seven days a week for at least one matinee and one evening show. The new venue will allow for at least 20 additional screenings to this year’s film festival, slated for July 30 to Aug. 4.
