Suspect Arrested In Wild KFC Robbery Caught On Tape

STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) - A 26-year-old Sterling Heights man faces armed robbery charges after he was allegedly caught on surveillance video threatening employees with a knife at a Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Police Lt. Luke Riley said it happened at around 9:20 p.m. Monday, shortly after the fast-food restaurant —  on Van Dyke Ave. in Sterling Heights — closed for the night.

Riley said the suspect, Andrew Hayden, tricked a female employee into opening the door by saying his friend had been hit by a car.

In the video, the employee can be heard letting out a blood curdling scream when, once inside, the suspect points a knife at her as he demands she give him all the money in the register.

"OK, I'm getting it," the girl tells the suspect, who, as she hands him the cash, complains, "It's only f— ones."

"Thank you, I appreciate that. You guys have a good day!" he adds, before exiting the scene.

Riley said Hayden fled with the money and was found by police at a nearby mobile home park a short time later.

Riley said Hayden was questioned by officers who determined he was the culprit.

"When they finally had enough information to make that determination ... they wanted to put him under arrest, and he resisted and actually kicked one of the officers in the face," Riley said. "But there were enough officers there that they got him under control."

Riley said this was not Hayden's first run in with the law.

"He's got prior convictions for criminal sexual conduct, second degree," Riley said. "He also had some outstanding warrants. He's also got prior convictions for domestic violence; had some outstanding warrants that he was arraigned on also for aggravated battery and failure to register as a convicted sex offender."

Hadyen was arraigned Tuesday on charges of armed robbery and resisting and obstructing an arrest.
