Good Samaritan Still Missing After Attempt To Rescue Boy In Water

MONROE (WWJ) - The Coast Guard continues their efforts Thursday morning to find a missing boater in Monroe County.

This is on the waters of Swan Creek where a 36-year-old Waterford man attempted to save an 8-year old boy last evening. The child is believed to have jumped into the water and began drifting away.

The little boy had his life-vest on -- and was able to swim to safety. But the missing boater was not wearing a life-preserver -- and after jumping in -- never surfaced.

Frenchtown Township Fire Lieutenant Mark Liedel was on the scene assisting the search. He says the creek water is not deep:

"It's probably approximately 6-8 feet deep at that point and it stays that way for quite a ways out," said Liedel.

The Coast Guard says the water temperature is about 70 degrees - and this morning the dive team is joining the search.

Coast guard officials have also begun a secondary search where they are combing the water's edge for any information that could help them find the missing boater.
