Northville Firefighters Raise $1,000 For Student Heart Check
DETROIT (CBS Detroit) As a paramedic, Northville firefighter Hugh Jordan knows all too well what can happen in the space of one heartbeat.
Your heart can stop.
That’s why Jordan and the rest of the Northville Township Professional Firefighters Union decided to donate to Student Heart Check, an initiative by William Beaumont Hospital to screen students 13 to 18 years old for often-undetected heart abnormalities that can cause sudden cardiac arrest. “We see a lot of student athletes and we’re all paramedics — so we see a lot of these calls and too many times they end tragically,” Jordan said.
To create more happy endings, Jordan and his fellow firefighters decided to use their annual community dance as a way to donate to Student Heart Check. They worked with 97.1 The Ticket to have a Nicklas Lidstrom jersey that had been donated to the firefighters by Fanzone signed by the big man himself at this February’s Sportsfest.
They auctioned the jersey at the dance for $500, pitched in another $500 in union funds, and gave the $1,000 to Beaumont for Student Heart Check.
Jordan was joined for the check presentation by Northville Lt. Brian Siriani, and firefighter Kyle Susewitz. Beaumont and 97.1 The Ticket’s Mike Stone accepted it on behalf of the program.
The firefighters are hoping to make an even bigger donation in 2014, when the fundraising dance grows from this year’s 340 tickets to a projected 600.
“There are always so many great causes that need help,” Jordan said.
