Points Leader Jimmy Shane Ready For Final Day Of Gold Cup Race

DETROIT (WWJ) - Today wraps up the 104th DYC Detroit APBA Gold Cup along the Detroit River. Points leader Jimmy Shane is ready to race this Sunday afternoon.

Speaking live on WWJ, Shane says the biggest challenge racing the hydroplane boats here is the Detroit River.

"Oh, the weekend's been fantastic. There's a good number of teams here that can go out there and win the Gold Cup today , so we're looking forward to having a great day with the Graham Trucking boat."

Robert Gruschow, of Northville, has been attending the Gold Cup for years and has seen a number of crashes...which is scary at times.

"It can be ... you'll see boats flip and you just hope the driver is okay and they can get up and race the next day," said Gruschow.

The roar on the water attracts fans like Sue Williams, of Windsor, for simpler reasons. "I like the fast, noisy boats," she laughed.

Also sitting along the river catching the action was Lee Conley, of Troy.

"I love it - boats going fast overtaking other boats on the water - got to love it," Conley said.

Tyler Biesiada was among the younger fans at the race - telling WWJ that it his was his first time there.

"They are awesome," said Biesiada. "They are really fast ... (going) 100 or something."

Activities run all day today and there's also food and live entertainment to go along with the hydroplane boat races.
