Suspected Nazi War Criminal Still In Michigan Despite Deportation Sentencing

TROY (WWJ) - Sentenced to deportation ... but still living in Troy.

Suspected Nazi war criminal John Kalymon exhausted his last appeal earlier this year... but his attorney Elias Xenos admits there is no country willing to take the deported 92-year-old.

"That's my understanding - no country would take him - and there may be some defenses to extradition if in fact a country decides to take that route," said Xenos.

Prosecutors say Kalymon served in the Ukrainian Auxiliary Police which rounded up and shot Jews during World War II.

But his attorney refutes that statement by the government.

"Mr. Kalymon never pledged any sort of allegiance to the Nazis - he was never part of the Nazi party - their own family members in the Ukraine

and Poland were persecuted by the Nazis and Germans," said Xenos.

Xenos denies Kalymon was a war criminal, saying he spent the war guarding a pile of coal.

"The only thing they have is flimsy imprints - scrapped together some fragments inherently unreliable war time documents - there were no eyewitness testimonies," he added.

Kalymon, he says, is in poor physical and mental health and being cared for by his family.

Kalymon is among 10 people who've been sentenced to deportation by the U.S. for Nazi war crimes but are still living here.
