Iglesias To Wear 'Sweet' Lou Whitaker's No. 1

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) Boooo! Or at least that's what the old Tiger Stadium used to sound like when "Sweet" Lou Whitaker got to the plate.

Will it happen again? No, but something else could remind Tigers fans of Sweet Lou in upcoming days.

New shortstop Jose Iglesias will don Whitaker's old number -- No. 1 -- when he takes the field at Comerica Park. It's the first time anyone else in a Tigers uniform has worn Whitaker's old number.

Iglesias wore No. 10 with the Red Sox.

The news of Iglesias' new number comes after the Tigers picked him up as suspension rumors swirl around shortstop Jhonny Peralta.

So will Iglesias live up to Whitaker's legacy? Dave Dombrowski seems to think so, heaping high praise on him a few days ago.

"Our scouting reports have him as an All-Star shortstop," Dombrowski said, calling Inglesias the 'shortstop of the future.' "I don't know if he'll be that or not, but some of our scouting reports do. But somebody that has seen him play just sent me a note and said, 'For all my years in the game, the only two defensive shortstops I've seen that are better are Ozzie and Vizquel.'"
