"The Big Latch On" Looks To Raise Awareness About Benefits Of Breastfeeding

KALAMAZOO (AP) - Nearly 50 mothers gathered in a Kalamazoo park to breastfeed their children in an effort to help eliminate the stigma of nursing in public and further educate people people about the benefits of breast milk.

The event was part of "The Big Latch On" an international world record attempt to raise awareness about breastfeeding by having thousands of women nourish their children in public.

Only one third of babies in the U.S. are breast fed, despite the benefits for both infant and mother.

The women were joined by family, friends and other onlookers.
