Rape, Torture, Murder Charges In Double-Slaying

PORT HURON (WWJ/AP) - An ex-convict has been charged with rape, torture and murder in the deaths of a couple at a Port Huron apartment complex.

Port Huron police Capt. Jeff Baker said 31-year-old Manuel F. Gamez of Port Huron man was arraigned Tuesday on two open counts of murder, two counts of torture and one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.

A judge ordered Gamez held without bond and set a preliminary examination for Aug. 20.

Police say they don't know if he has a lawyer. They didn't disclose his previous crimes.

The bodies of 29-year-old Daniel W. McRoberts and 26-year-old Michelle R. Ichenberg were found on July 30 at around 7:30 p.m. inside a home at the Gratiot Village apartment complex in the 1400 block of Riverview Street near 10th Avenue, just north of the Blue Water Bridge toll road.

Autopsies show McRoberts was stabbed and Ichenberg was strangled.
