ROYAL OAK (WWJ) – The time is approaching for classic cars, and runners, to take over Woodward Avenue.

On Saturday, Aug. 17 — the same day as the Woodward Dream Cruise — the second annual Cruise In Shoes 5K run/walk will begin at 7:30 a.m in Royal Oak.

After that, classic cars will cover 16 miles of Woodward during the Dream Cruise — a tradition for Metro-Detroit since 1995.

Cruise President Greg Rassel is expecting a big turnout this year for both events.

“On Saturday we’ll probably top out at a million and a half,” Rassel said.  “Some of those people visit the whole week leading up to the Dream Cruise.”

Rassel said the Cruise In Shoes plays a part in making the Dream Cruise happen.

“That benefits the Dream Cruise,” Rassel said.  “It helps defray a lot of the costs for putting on this event.  There’s a lot of money that goes into making this a safe, fun family event.”

The Cruise In Shoes is still accepting participants online until August 9. Participants can also sign up on the day of the event over at Shrine High School where the run will begin.
