Man Killed In Moped Crash

FERNDALE (WWJ) - A 59-year-old man is dead after crashing his moped into an electric pole in Ferndale.

Witnesses told police that the man was weaving the bike along Farrow Street at Saratoga Wednesday afternoon, when he swerved and slammed into the pole. The impact sent him over the handlebars — and he struck his head on the pole.

According to police, the man got up and talked to neighbors, but then collapsed and died.

He was not wearing a helmet.

"This unfortunate incident should serve as a reminder as the benefit of wearing helmets while using a moped or bicycle," said Ferndale Police Department Det. Lt. William Wilson, in a media release.

The man's name was not immediately released.
