100 Meals On Wheels Volunteers Needed

DETROIT (WWJ) – Are you free on Labor Day?

Reminding us that hunger takes no holiday, The Detroit Area Agency on Aging is putting out the call for volunteers who will collect and deliver hot meals to 4,500 home bound and disabled seniors who depend on the Meals On Wheels program.

Outreach director Andrea Johnson says about 100 volunteers are still needed.

“It is the largest Labor Day delivery that we’ve had in a while,” she said. “It is for our surrounding communities as well: the Grosse Pointes, Highland Park, Hamtramck and Harper Woods.”

One local corporation has already stepped up to aid the DAAA’s Labor Day effort.

“We generally get corporate support for Thanksgiving and Christmas. But we’re happy to say, for Labor Day,  Flagstar Bank has stepped up,” Johnson said. “They saw the need in our population, and they have donated $17,500 towards this Labor Day meal delivery.”

Flagstar Bank staff will also help pack and deliver the meals.

To volunteer your time, call 313-446-4444 Ext. 5804.
