Cops: Man Accidentally Shoots Himself Cleaning Out House

CLINTON TWP. (WWJ) Police say a Harper Woods man who was helping to clean out a Clinton Township home accidentally shot and killed himself over the weekend when he found a loaded gun in a closet.

Clinton Township Police Captain Richard Maierle said the 41-year-old man was helping to clean the home on East Horseshoe, the home of a couple who had died recently, when he found the gun.

Maierle said the victim didn't check the gun to see if it was loaded before handing it off to his father-in-law.

And the gun went off -- shooting him in the neck. His wife and mother-in-law were also there.

Maierle described the situation as a tragic accident.
