Highland Park Street Blocked Off After Shooting

DETROIT (WWJ) - A police situation is unfolding in Highland Park where a street has been blocked off following a shooting.

The situation is happening near Richton and Third streets, where a dozen police cruisers have gathered.

Reporting live from the scene, WWJ's Vickie Thomas said there was some serious gunfire in the area. She could see several yellow tags marking shell casings in the street, with one resting on top of a mini van.

Police Chief Kevin Coney said a man in his 20s was shot in the leg and taken to the hospital. No word yet on any motive for the shooting or if a suspect is in custody.

Coney said additional details on the shooting are expected to be released later Thursday.

A man who lives nearby, who did not want to be named, said he heard the gunfire.

"I heard six shots, it was daylight," he said. "I'm not surprised, not surprised at all. It's every day here, every day it's always something."

A shot up minivan was towed from the scene, along with a brand new Ford that was completely stripped.
