Memorial Honoring Veterans To Be Built In Brighton

BRIGHTON (WWJ/AP) - Work is set to begin soon on a new memorial to veterans in Brighton.

Organizers say enough donations have been raised and pledged to build the memorial expected to cost $125,000 to $150,000.

"I couldn't be more elated for the culmination of this," Bryan Bradford, chairman of the Brighton Veterans Memorial committee, told the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus of Howell.

Work is scheduled to begin during the second week of September, with completion by Veterans Day on Nov. 11. A dedication is scheduled for Nov. 9.

Bradford is a U.S. Army disabled veteran who began working on the project with others more than three years ago.

"This sends a message loud and clear to any vet who sees it: This community cares," Bradford said. No taxpayer money will be spent on the effort.

"I think this brings a reverence and a thank-you to the veterans who have served our country," said Ricci Bandkau, who also is a committee and Brighton City Council member.

The memorial will be located near Main and West streets. Personalized bricks are still available for purchase.
