Police: Man Kills Self In Apparent Accident

ROYAL OAK (WWJ) – Royal Oak police say a 61-year-old man was found dead in the lobby of the North Main condominium complex on Main Street.

Police were called to the scene, at 111 North Main, late Monday morning on a report of an injured person in the lobby — but the man was dead when officers and EMS arrived.

The cause of death was a gunshot wound, according to police, who said it appears the Royal Oak man’s own legally registered handgun had accidentally discharged.  The weapon was found next to his body.

An investigation is ongoing.

The man’s name was not immediately released as authorities work to contact his family.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Royal Oak Police Department at 248-246-3500.
