DETROIT (CBS Detroit) Do you guys keep any cash here? — Anyplace, in a desk, a neighbor’s desk?”

Following those words, an inspector ended up at the Duncanville, Texas, office desk of Carlita Kilpatrick, wife of disgraced ex-mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.

There was cash in her desk, $341 to be exact.

Kilpatrick stood by wearing no makeup, a shapeless white T-shirt and jeans — a far cry from her dolled up First Lady of Detroit days — while they searched her desk. An armed officer stood by.

“What is this?” the inspector asks her in the video, pulling out what looks like a zipped money bag.

“It is change, from like overages or different things,” Carlita Kilpatrick says.

The inspector says the policy calls for all overages to be reported, with nothing held back, adding he’s going to report it to the city manager. He adds it’s not a criminal offense, just a matter of “not following procedures.”

Kilpatrick was later let go from her $41,200 job at the city’s athletic department, with the explanation that she didn’t meet the qualifications for the job.

Her husband is awaiting an Oct. 10 sentencing on his federal conviction for racketeering, or running something prosecutors called “the Kilpatrick enterprise” with his father and best friend, all allegedly on the take while Kilpatrick ran Detroit.

The Kilpatricks faced public scrutiny  many times over their seemingly lavish lifestyle in Texas while Kwame was awaiting trial and claiming he was unable to pay his court ordered fines in Detroit.
