‘Evening Of Empowerment’ In Royal Oak

ROYAL OAK (WWJ) – One Metro Detroit community taking a proactive approach to the growing epidemic of suicide.

To help shatter the stigma, Royal Oak SAFE — which stands for Suicide Awareness is For Everyone — is hosting “Evening of Empowerment,” Wednesday night at Royal Oak Middle School.

WWJ Health Reporter Sean Lee Spoke with City Commissioner Peggy Goodwin.

“People are saying, look, this is at epedemic levels. This is taking our youths; it’s taking adults in Michigan, at a rate higher than the national average. It’s taking people of all walks of life,” said Goodwin, “so, we need to talk about this. We need to talk about doing something about it.”

The event features a panel of survivors, mental health professionals and SAFE Task Force representatives.

The event begins at 6 p.m.  in the Royal Oak Middle School Auditorium.

It’s free and open to everyone.
