Scam Alert: Phony Cop Targeting Seniors

REDFORD (WWJ) - Redford police are looking for a man who's been pretending to be a cop to scam local seniors.

The Redford Police Department has received multiple reports from senior citizens saying a man claiming to be a police officer called them to ask for cash, supposedly to help to work a case.

The fake officer arranges to meet the victim near his or her bank, take the money, and disappears.

The suspect is described only as a black male between the ages of 30 and 40.  He has not been seen wearing a police uniform, but he did flash a badge he wore on his belt during the last incident.

Police say anyone who receives a call from someone claiming to be an officer should call the department back for verification. They're also asking bank employees to pay close attention to seniors making large withdrawals and to warn them about these scams.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact Detective William Hand at 313-387-2578.
