SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) –– An informational meeting about the Global Robotics Art Festival will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 10 to 11 a.m., for students, coaches, teachers, and parents, in Room M218 of the Buell Management Building at Lawrence Technological University, 21000 W. 10 Mile Road in Southfield.
Organizers seek more teams to participate in GRAF to be held on Nov. 23 at Macomb Community College. GRAF is open to student teams from grades 4-12. Robotic artists will compete in visual and performing robotic arts categories.
Examples of visual robotic arts include interactive kinetic sculptures, kinetic canvases, and robotic painters. Examples of performing robotic arts include a robot dancer, a group of robot dancers with synchronized moves, a robot fashion show, robots that play music, and a robotic musical instrument that can be played by humans or help humans play music.
The robots must have computational components programmed by participants and must be integrative by employing sensors.
The goal of GRAF is to get students to pursue their interest in science, technology, engineering and math, known as the STEM subjects.
This event is a brain child of Professor CJ Chung of LTU’s Department of Computer Science and Mathematics who is the founder of Robofest®, RoboParade®, and RoboMusic Camp. He has developed several fun ways for young students to pursue STEM subjects.
“Why arts and robots? People love arts including music, and robotics is all about STEM. The combination of the two would create a true interdisciplinary and lifelong learning environment,” Chung said.
