Beaumont: Postpartum Depression Can Be Dangerous

DETROIT (WWJ) There are lots of questions surrounding the mental state of the woman shot to death by police yesterday during the Capitol lockdown in Washington, DC.

Investigators are trying to piece together what led Miriam Carey, 34, to try to breach a barrier at the White House.

Carey's mother has said her daughter was suffering from postpartum depression since the birth of daughter in 2012 and had even been hospitalized at one point.

Kelly Ryan coordinates Beaumont Hospital's postpartum program, and she said the results of untreated postpartum depression can be tragic.

"A lot of times women, because of that stigma, they want to stop that treatment as soon as possible," Ryan said. "It's very important to be followed up medically until somebody is 100 percent well."
