9-Year-Old Hula Hoops Her Way Into The Records Book

ANN ARBOR (WWJ) - A nine-year-old girl from Ann Arbor who says she just likes to hula hoop is now in the Guinness Book of World Records.

"I like to hula hoop and break records," said fourth grader Mridula Shanker.

Shanker just got confirmation that she is the new record holder for hula hooping 166 rotations in a minute in the arabesque pose, which is a ballet move.

"It's a gymnastic position - you have to lift your leg and extend the hoop on the leg you're lifting, ninety degrees" she explained to WWJ's Sandra McNeill.

While the arabesque move may sound challenging to the average person Mridula says "it's kind of easy," with a charming giggle.

Her father says that Mridula likes to set goals and reach them.

Shanker has already set a record for the fastest hula hooping around the waist on one foot.

Shanker says she hula hoops for 30-60 minutes a day and says she learned to hula hoop by watching videos on YouTube.
