Plans Move Forward On $50M Wind Power Project

RUBICON TWP. (WWJ/AP) - Plans are moving forward for a $50 million wind power project in Huron County that's expected to serve customers of DTE Energy Co.

The Huron County Board of Commissioners this week gave a key approval for the 10-turbine Big Turtle Wind Farm on about 2,800 acres in Rubicon Township, about 110 miles north of Detroit, the Huron Daily Tribune of Bad Axe reported.

"It's a $50 million project that's moving in the right direction," Rick Wilson, vice president of operations at Heritage Energy, told the board. "We can break ground this year."

The wind park will contain more than 50 percent of Michigan-sourced material, components and labor. DTE Energy said the 10 turbine, 20 megawatt project will create enough energy to power about 9,000 homes.

Last week, Heritage Sustainable Energy LLC got permission to start on access roads for the project. DTE has said it likely will be operational by late 2014.

In September, DTE Energy said it got approval from the Michigan Public Service Commission to purchase power from Heritage subsidiary Big Turtle Wind Farm LLC.
