Investigation Underway After Skydiver Death In Macomb County

MACOMB COUNTY (WWJ) - Michigan State Police say a 34-year-old skydiver died after he fell and hit a woman on the ground. Lt. Michael Shaw says the accident happened Saturday evening at the Ray Township Airport in Macomb County.

Witnesses say Kenneth Bernek of Waterford fell out of control, struck a tree, and then collided into a woman standing on the ground.

"We haven't gotten into the particulars of what may have caused this accident," said Lt. Shaw. "Basically what we are looking for is any criminal offenses that may have taken place, if they haven't then we'll just close our investigation - as an accident. So, we'll wait for the autopsy results from the Macomb County Medical Examiner and make sure there is nothing there ..."

The woman who was hit by Bernek was treated and released.

Police say Bernek's parachute was open.
