Detroit’s Finest Reverting Back To 8-Hour Shifts

DETROIT (WWJ) – Detroit’s Finest may be looking forward to going to work on this particular Monday morning. That’s because the city’s police officers are going back to 8-hour shifts.

Detroit Police officers have been working 12-hour shifts the past several months, ever since the previous administration implemented the change to cut costs; a move that drew fire from police officers and sank department morale. After taking office in July, Police Chief James Craig took another look at the situation and decided last month to return to 8-hour shifts. The department will also offer 10-hour power shifts, overlapping the shifts before and after, to officers who want them.

Officials say the 12-hour shifts were hard on the families and personal lives of officers. And they say it will mean a more rested police force to better handle the demands of the job.
