Driver Hits Student, Says Vomiting Wife Distracted Him

SPRINGFIELD TWP. (WWJ) - A 22-year-old Holly man told police he was distracted by his pregnant wife throwing up in his car when he accidentally struck a student who was trying to board a school bus in metro Detroit.

Police said the incident happened around 7 a.m. Monday in the 7000 block of Ormond Road in Springfield Township as the school bus was stopped with its flashing red lights activated, waiting for students to board.

According to the Oakland County Sheriff's Department, a 17-year-old student was crossing the road to board the bus when a southbound traveling vehicle failed to stop and struck the student, pushing him into a ditch.

The student was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries and kept overnight for observation.

The driver, who stopped after the collision, told police he didn't see the bus' red lights because he was distracted by his pregnant wife, who was throwing up. He was cited for failure to stop for a school bus.

No other injuries were reported.
