DETROIT (WWJ) – The longtime Skillman Foundation president, Carol Goss, has dedicated her life to helping children in Detroit. With her retirement looming at the end of the year, a scholarship has been named in her honor — awarding $10,000 each year to a student in the Masters program at the University of Michigan School of Social Work.

Goss is a graduate of the school and she’s thrilled with the honor.

“It will focus on building leaders who we hope will work in communities on behalf of children. So I’m really excited about that. It’s really an honor,” says Goss.

Goss says social workers can help fill a void missing in communities.

“We need social workers who will be well-trained to work in communities on behalf of youth, and to work with residents and parents and young people in those neighborhoods. So I’m just really excited about the opportunity,” says Goss.

But Goss won’t be taking it easy in retirement. She’ll spend a year working on a project at Harvard University, as well as continue her philanthropic work throughout metro Detroit.
