Man Charged In December Death Of 1-Year-Old Girl

KALAMAZOO (AP) - A 22-year-old man has been charged in the death of a 1-year-old Kalamazoo-area girl who authorities say had hemorrhaging in her brain and eyes as well as alcohol and marijuana in her blood.

The Kalamazoo Gazette reports charges were authorized last month against Toren V. Hains, of Traverse City. He's charged with open murder, felony murder and first-degree child abuse in the December death of Zoie Grace Johnston of Oshtemo Township.

The Associated Press sent a message Monday to Hains' court-appointed lawyer Keith Turpel.

Hains is due in court Oct. 31. The case was investigated by the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office, which didn't release information on the death.

Documents show the girl died Dec. 31 at a hospital. A death certificate said cause and manner of death were pending.
