Brother, Sister Killed In 2 Separate, Tragic Incidents

DETROIT (WWJ) - Two members of one family were killed in tragic circumstances overnight on Detroit's east side.

It all started when a woman shot herself in the chest at her father's bar on Kercheval near Eastlawn at about 1:00 Sunday morning. Detroit Police spokeswoman Kelly Miner says the woman was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. Miner says her brother was racing to the hospital to see her and he was killed in a collision on East Warren.

"Her brother was racing down East Warren trying to get to the hospital," Miner said. "He didn't probably know she had died and he was rushing to the hospital to see how she was doing. He left the center (lane) and struck an SUV and unfortunately, he was involved in an accident, and when they took him to the hospital, he died on arrival."

Miner says the driver of the other vehicle suffered only minor injuries. She says the investigation is ongoing, but calls it tragic for the family.

"Our preliminary findings show that it was, it's just a tragedy all the way around because this father and ... we know for sure the father is this bar owner, and obviously he's lost two children in this tragic incident."

No IDs are being released pending notification of family members.
