MANTON, Mich. (WWJ/AP) – Sheriff’s officials say a northern Michigan man was seriously hurt over the weekend when a homemade cannon he was trying to load exploded.
MLive.com report Wexford County deputies responded Sunday afternoon to the home near Manton, just down the road from the Liberty Township Hall, about 25 miles southeast of Traverse City.
The department said the 48-year-old man who lived at the home was loading the cannon, which was designed to make noise.
According to the Cadillac News, 911 was called and the man’s girlfriend administered first aid while they waited for emergency crews to arrive.
The man was reported to be conscious when taken by helicopter to Munson Hospital in Traverse City for treatment of what were classified as “very serious” injuries.
Sheriff’s officials are working to determine if the cannon was legal to own.
The case is expected to be turned over to prosecutors for review.
