Couple Charged With Stealing 48 Cans Of Baby Formula

LENOX TWP. (WWJ/AP) - A man and woman have been charged with the theft of 48 cans of baby formula from a Macomb County store.

Jonathan Allen, of Sterling Heights, Danielle Hannaford, of Hazel Park, were arraigned this week in New Baltimore District Court. Both were charged with second-degree retail fraud, while Hannaford received an additional charge of fourth-degree fleeing and eluding police.

The charges stem from an incident on Monday at the Meijer store on 26 Mile Road near I-94 in Lenox Township.

Sheriff's deputies responded to store after receiving a report that a man, later identified as 37-year-old Allen, had stolen several canisters of baby formula. After the theft, police say Allen got into a waiting gray Saturn, driven by 33-year-old Hannaford.

Luckily, deputies made it to the area before the gray Saturn had exited the store's parking lot. Deputies tried to initiate a traffic stop, but Hannaford continued driving onto 26 Mile Road.

Deputies eventually were able to stop Hannaford's vehicle by blocking her from driving onto the I-94 entrance ramp. After placing the couple under arrest, deputies searched the vehicle, where they found 48 cans of baby formula worth about $800.

Allen and Hannaford remain in police custody. They're scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

Both Allen and Hannaford have prior convictions for retail fraud, The Detroit News reported.
