Focus On Fire Safety: Replace Those Batteries In Your Smoke Detectors

DETROIT (WWJ) - Since you set your clocks back this weekend, it's also time to change the batteries in your smoke detectors. The Detroit Fire Department is handing out free batteries for smoke detectors if you turn in your old ones.

First Battalion Detroit firefighter Michael Joiner says he's seen many fires where there were no working smoke detectors.

"I've seen em all the time . It's something I can't emphasize enough that people should have in their homes. I even , you know, have family members that , for whatever reason, don't have 'em or you know, have taken the batteries out and I'll see that & I'll always make it a point to tell them, 'Go get it, replace it," said Joiner.

The Detroit Fire Department is giving out those smoke detector batteries at all firehouses until 6:30 Sunday evening and from 11 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. on Monday.
