Fun Day Of Football Turns Into Charitable Event In Eastpointe

DETROIT (WWJ) - It's a football game with a goal of helping those in need. The 4th annual Turkey Day Classic takes place at 4 p.m. at Eastpointe Memorial Field in Eastpointe on Saturday.

Attendees are encouraged to bring canned goods to the event -- with proceeds will benefit Matrix Human Services.

"It's a great organization - they have 24 different locations with 17 programs that help people who are down on their luck - they help them out with food and clothing every week," said Ray Templin, who will be taking part in the game.

He tells WWJ the event started off four years ago just as a way to have some fun.

"Just a bunch of guys that wanted to play on Thanksgiving 'cause they were tired of watching the (Detroit) Lions so we started our own game - it ended up growing into a charity football game," said Templin.

Proceeds will help the many services at Matrix Human Services. The Turkey Bowl will kick-off at 4 p.m. November 23.
