BCBSM And Detroit Lions Team Up On Thanksgiving Day

DETROIT, Nov. 26, 2013 — Thanksgiving Day at Ford Field will look a little different this year as Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Blue Care Network and the Detroit Lions team up to send important messages about our health and community.

“Our commitment to better health spans far beyond providing quality health insurance,” said Lynda Rossi, senior vice president, public affairs and chief of staff for BCBSM.  “Supporting key health issues – like men’s and children’s health – is just one of the many ways Blue Cross carries forward our commitment of promoting good health for everyone in Michigan. We applaud the Lions for joining Blue Cross on this important date on the football calendar to engage their fans and people across the nation in our shared goal of a healthier future.”

Promoting Men’s Health:  50,000 Lions fans will receive moustache-themed rally towels in support of Blue Cross’ “Movember” campaign to encourage men to get screened for prostate cancer and develop stronger relationships with their doctors.  Fans are encouraged to share moustache pictures on Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #ShoYoMo to support the cause.

Preventing Childhood Obesity:  Part of the Detroit Lions’ halftime show will focus on children’s wellness, and support NFL efforts to encourage kids to be active for 60 minutes a day.  Blue Cross shares the Lions’ commitment to children’s health.  BCBSM’s Building Healthy Communities program has provided more than $5 million to schools and communities to address childhood obesity and promote wellness among Michigan children.

One Detroit, One Pride: Another portion of the halftime show will include audience participation and feature a “One Detroit, One Pride” message, presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and supporting United Way. The Detroit Lions’ “One Detroit, One Pride” campaign represents the team’s broad commitment to the greater Detroit community.  BCBSM has nearly 6,000 employees located in downtown Detroit, where it has been headquartered for nearly 75 years. Over the last decade, Blues employees have donated nearly $12 million to United Way in an effort to strengthen and enhance lives in communities across Michigan.
