EMU Student Injured In Gunfire At Apartment

YPSILANTI (WWJ) - Police say a 24-year-old Eastern Michigan University student is recovering after being shot while at her off-campus apartment.

The shooting happened around 1:40 a.m. Tuesday at the Peninsular Place Apartments on Huron River Drive, located across the street from the campus police station.

According to a police report, the student was in her apartment when "a projectile penetrated the outer wall" and struck her in the shoulder.

The victim, whose name was not released, was treated at a local hospital and was last reported in stable condition.

Police say the shot appears to have been fired randomly into the air from a location outside of the apartment complex. Other circumstances surrounding the incident weren't immediately clear. No arrests have been made.

An investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact Ypsilanti police at 734-483-9510.

The apartment complex where the shooting took place has recently been under the microscope of a murder investigation. Twenty-three-year-old student Julia Niswender was found dead in her bathtub nearly a year ago. Her death has been ruled a homicide, caused by asphyxiation associated with drowning, but police are still looking for suspects.

Patrols in the area have also been stepped up following the October death of another student in what police say was a robbery gone wrong. Varsity football player Demarius Reed was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds in a hallway at the University Green apartments. Two suspects, 20-year-olds Kristopher Pratt and Ed Thomas, were arraigned last week in connection with Reed's murder.
