Police: Shotgun-Wielding Mugger Targets Dog Walkers

DETROIT (WWJ) – Detroit police are looking for at least one suspect who has been robbing people as they walk their dogs.

Three people were robbed early Tuesday morning as they walked in a neighborhood near Grand River and Outer Drive on the city’s west side.

According to police, one victim was approached at around 5:30 a.m. in the area of Bretton Dr. and Warwick. When he told the thief he had no cash, the suspect pointed a shotgun at his dog. That’s when he handed over the keys to his 2006 Jeep Cherokee.

The suspect escaped eastbound on Bretton Dr., driving the Jeep — license plate number BDU1248.

Shortly after the first robbery, a thief approached two other people walking their dog in the same area.  The man took a cell phone from one victim and then assaulted the other, police said.

No serious injuries were reported.

The suspect in the first incident was described as a black male with a dark complexion. The suspect in the second incident was described as a black male around 5 feet, 10 inches tall.

Anyone with information on this crime is encouraged to call the Detroit Police Criminal Investigations unit at 313-596-5240.
