Father Of 2 Children Killed In House Fire Arrested On Unrelated Charges

DETROIT (WWJ) - A fire on Detroit's northwest side last Friday, killed two children — ages one and four.

The children died after Detroit firefighters pulled them from the burning house — on Prairie Street, just east of Livernois. They were left home alone, and now, their father has been arrested.

Detroit police tell WWJ that the arrest is not in connection with the fire, but for past warrants, including a home invasion.

The 37-year-old dad has said to police that the children were left alone for only ten minutes, and when he came back to the home on Prairie Street, the house was immersed in flames.

At the time police were investigating whether this could be a case of arson, after one witness reported seeing a truck in front of the home, and someone throwing an object toward or inside the house.

Police said space heaters were found on the home's lower level and that could be another factor in the case.
