Police: Thief Steals Car Warming Up In Driveway

ROSEVILLE (WWJ) - It can be tempting to run out and start the car to let it warm up in the winter, but it's not always safe.

According to Roseville police, a thief stole an SUV as it was left warming up — for just a few minutes — with the keys in the ignition, while parked in a residential driveway. It happened early Friday morning in the 19000-block of Kelly Road, near 13-and-a-half Mile.

Fraser police spotted the stolen SUV, a 2005 GMC Envoy, and the driver jumped out as it was moving. The SUV rolled into a house and caused minor damage.

No one was hurt.

The suspect, a 20-year-old Detroit resident, jumped out of the vehicle and fled on foot, police said.  With the help of the St. Clair Shores K-9 unit, he was found hiding in a nearby garage.

Charges are pending.  The suspect remained jailed Friday afternoon pending an arraignment in 39th District Court.

His name was not immediately released.
