DETROIT (WWJ) - A tragedy on the city's westside as an elderly couple who'd been married for 60 years dies in a house fire.

Officials say 91-year-old Willie Evans and his 87-year-old wife Mildred died in the fire on Monica Street, near Davison and Livernois.

Interim Fire Chief Jonathon Jackson told WWJ Newsradio 950 that by the time fire crews raced to the scene, it was already too late:

"This is just a tragedy the fire fighters they got here very speedily, within three minutes we had firefighters on the scene but this was a situation where when they got here it was beyond their control at that point," said Jackson.

Family members think the fire started in the kitchen, but officials have not yet confirmed the cause of the fire.
